The original Amiralty rum. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the ships purser or ‘pusser’, as he was called, shutdown claims of watering down sailors daily rum rations by mixing in a few grains of gun powder to the rum to see if it would burn. If the mixture ignited, the rum was at ‘proof’. if it didnt, the purser might find himself tossed in the sea. pussers rum remained at ‘Gunpowder’ strength until the daily issue was terminated on the 3th of july 197, now known as black tot day.
